Preparation for Paddy Cultivation in Madhubani
In the month of May, most parts of Bihar have received rainfall, leading to farmers starting preparations for paddy cultivation. With the onset of the Rohini Nakshatra from May 25th, farmers in Madhubani district have begun their preparations to sow paddy crops. The Agriculture Department estimates that paddy cultivation in 1.83 lakh hectares is likely this year, with a production target of 4.50 lakh metric tons.
Guidance for Seed Sowing and Procurement
Agricultural scientists are recommending farmers to sow seeds of varieties that mature in 140 to 160 days during the Rohini Nakshatra. For water-retentive soils, long-duration seed varieties are suggested. The Bihar State Seed Corporation has been requested to make paddy seeds available, and official seed suppliers have been advised to procure paddy seeds. The emphasis is on the “First come, first served” approach for seed distribution.
Encouragement for High-Yield Farming Methods
Under the Chief Minister’s Tejveer Seed Expansion Scheme, the goal is to distribute 157.20 quintals of paddy seeds in Madhubani. Farmers will receive 6 kg of seeds per acre under the “First come, first served” scheme, with a 90% subsidy. Different subsidy rates are allocated based on the age of the paddy variety being sown. Additionally, farmers are encouraged to adopt modern farming methods like the Sri technique for higher yields and profits in paddy cultivation compared to traditional methods.
