Bridge Collapse in Supaul, Bihar
A major incident has occurred in Supaul, Bihar where a part of the country’s longest road bridge being constructed over the Kosi river has collapsed. It has been reported that sections of pillars 50, 51, and 52 of the bridge have fallen to the ground, resulting in several injuries. One person has been confirmed dead, with reports of 8 others being injured and concerns that more than 20 people may be trapped under the debris.
Local Anger and Rescue Efforts
Following the incident, local residents are furious as rescue efforts have not yet commenced after the collapse of the bridge section. Although the administration team has arrived at the site, the lack of adequate equipment in the area between the Kosi river is hindering the rescue and relief operations. The situation is challenging as people fear that over 20 individuals might be trapped beneath the fallen girders.
Construction of the Mahasetu Bridge
The construction of the longest bridge in the country, spanning from Bakour in Supaul district to Bheja in Madhubani district, is progressing rapidly. With a total cost of Rs 1199.58 crore, the project is set to be completed by August 2023, with the target now shifted to the end of 2024. The bridge will have a total of 171 pillars, with over 166 already completed, and a 3-kilometer approach path will be constructed as part of the project.
