There is good news for people living in Bihar who want to travel abroad. The way for international flights from Jayprakash Narayan International Airport (JPNI) in Patna is now clearing up. The biggest problem regarding land for the new radar has been solved recently. The district administration has officially given the required land to the airport authority, and technical work is expected to finish in the next six months.
Radar Installation and Timeline
The airport officials have received about one acre of land each from ICAR and BIADA to set up the new radar system. This installation process will take some time and is likely to be completed by August 2026. This technical upgrade is very necessary for the airport.
The new radar will track the real-time location, speed, and distance of planes accurately. This is very important for landing planes safely during winter when fog reduces visibility. Once this system is active and safety is ensured, getting permission from DGCA for international flights will become much easier.
New Routes and Government Support
Under the new plans, direct flights from Patna to Kathmandu, Bangkok, and Singapore are likely to start soon. This will save time and money for passengers who currently go to Delhi or Kolkata to catch these flights. The Bihar Government has also approved a ‘New International Destination Policy’ to support this.
To encourage airlines, the state government will give a financial subsidy of up to Rs 5 lakh per round trip for the Patna-Kathmandu route. Additionally, infrastructure is improving fast. The new terminal building is being made with international standards, and 5 aerobridges have already started working since January 31, 2026.
