Commuters traveling between Patna and Hajipur can look forward to smoother journeys in the near future. The construction of the new four-lane bridge running parallel to the Mahatma Gandhi Setu is progressing steadily, with approximately 60% of the work now complete. This project is a significant step towards reducing traffic congestion in the region and improving connectivity between north and south Bihar.

When will the new bridge become operational?

The timeline for the project has been updated recently. The main bridge structure is targeted for completion by December 2026. However, the entire route connecting to Hajipur is expected to open to the public in early 2027. Once operational, it will serve as a vital link for daily commuters and freight carriers who currently face heavy jams on the old bridge.

Project cost and construction details

This major infrastructure initiative is being funded by the central government. The total estimated cost for the construction stands at ₹2,926.42 crore. The project is being overseen by the Bihar Road Construction Department, with SP Singla Construction Private Limited handling the actual building work. The dimensions of the project are as follows:

  • Main Bridge Length: 5.5 kilometers
  • Total Project Length: 14.5 kilometers (including approach roads)
  • Lane Type: Four-lane bridge
