Power Cuts in Bihar Cause Public Outrage

Residents of Bihar are facing frequent power cuts, leading to widespread dissatisfaction among the population. The issue is affecting both northern and southern areas of the state. In response, people have taken to the streets to protest against the power companies responsible for the outages. Some individuals have also filed complaints with the power companies, but have faced threats of legal action in return.

Sit-in Protest in Nawada

Villagers in Nawada district organized a sit-in protest to demand a solution to the electricity problem. The demonstration caused a roadblock and disrupted traffic on Rajgir Bodh Gaya Highway 82 for about an hour. The police were called to manage the situation, and the protestors demanded a continuous and reliable supply of electricity. The farmers participating in the protest insisted on the presence of senior officials from the electricity department to address their concerns.

Electricity Crisis in Bihar

  • Bihar is currently facing a power crisis as NTPC supplied 2,000 MW less power than required on Sunday.
  • The power company should be supplying 6,200 MW, but it is only providing 4,200 MW due to production stoppages in various NTPC units.
  • NTPC has provided some information about the expected resumption of production for certain units, but has not provided any details for others. The power company is also facing a shortage of available power, hindering its ability to bid for power in the power exchange.

Reasons for the Crisis

  • The Farakka production unit of NTPC, which supplies 141 MW to Bihar, has been closed since July.
  • Unit-1 of Darlipalli, which used to provide 150 MW, has also been shut down.
  • Bihar is only receiving 52 MW instead of the expected 78 MW from a unit at Kahalgaon due to poor coal quality.
  • Unit-2 of NTPC’s Stage-1 located at Barh is providing only 305 MW instead of the promised 371 MW.
  • Unit-1 of flood stage-1 is not operating, resulting in zero power supply due to a boiler fault.
  • Power supply from Unit 4 of Stage-2 of Barh has also been completely cut off, reducing the supply by 536 MW.

Male Condemns Threat of Lawsuit

The Male party has strongly condemned the power company’s threat to sue individuals who complain about the continuous power cuts. The party’s District Secretary, Indrajit Chaurasia, criticized the privatization of the power department, stating that the problem has only worsened. The Male party demands that the power company withdraw its order and promptly resolve the electricity crisis.

Power Supply Situation in Patna

According to the General Manager of Patna Electricity Supply Establishment, Murtaza Helal, Patna district has not been significantly affected by the power crisis. The urban areas in the district are receiving sufficient power, with no load shedding reported. However, there were power cuts in rural areas on Saturday, but the situation improved on Sunday.

Technical Fault Affects Power Generation in Muzaffarpur

The North Bihar Power Distribution Company Ltd. (NBPDCL) has been supplying significantly less power than demanded due to a technical fault in the power generation unit. As a result, power is being supplied on a rotation basis to several districts. The situation is expected to return to normal within one to two days. Muzaffarpur has experienced power outages in both urban and rural areas, causing inconvenience to the residents.

Additional Areas Affected by Power Cuts

Several other areas in Bihar are also experiencing power cuts, leading to public frustration. The villages of Kusheshwarsthan, Bachhadpur, Shahkund, Sitamarhi, and Kahalgaon are among the areas affected. The residents have expressed their dissatisfaction and are considering various forms of protest, including blockades and demonstrations.
