Power Outage at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport
The recent power outage incident at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Monday has not only caused inconvenience to the general public but has also raised concerns about the government’s preparedness. Following the incident at the IGI airport, special attention is being given to the railways and Delhi Metro. Energy ministry officials attribute the increase in tripping incidents in the country to the severe heatwave, with states like UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Gujarat at risk due to resource and manpower shortages.
Concerns Over Electricity Consumption and Production
Despite a target of 1900 billion units set by the Energy Ministry for electricity production in the fiscal year 2024-25, the country is facing a severe electricity crisis. The actual production of 1738.828 BU in the previous year has fallen short, leading to increased consumption in states like Delhi-NCR, Haryana, UP, Bihar, and others. The country’s total annual electricity consumption has surpassed 1400 billion kWh for the first time, with Maharashtra leading in electricity consumption followed by Gujarat, UP, Tamil Nadu, and Odisha.
Comparison of Electricity Consumption in India and Other Countries
India’s electricity consumption per capita is significantly lower compared to other countries, with an average of 1181 KWH per person. Bihar has the lowest electricity consumption per capita at 311 KWH, followed by Assam at 341 KWH. Goa tops the list with an average monthly consumption of 267.3 kWh per family. The disparity in electricity consumption among states highlights the need for efficient resource management and infrastructure development to meet the growing demand for power in the country.
