Focus on Cultivation of Coarse Grains in Gaya District

This year, during the Kharif season, there is a strong emphasis on the cultivation of coarse grains by the Agriculture Department. Especially in districts like Gaya, Aurangabad, Nawada, and Jehanabad in South Bihar, where there is less rainfall, farmers are heavily dependent on rain during the Kharif season. Due to insufficient rainfall, most of the land remains fallow in these areas. In response, the Agriculture Department is encouraging farmers to cultivate coarse grains.

Why Cultivate Coarse Grains During the Kharif Season?

In Gaya district alone, around 24,000 acres will be used for maize cultivation and approximately 10,000 acres for millet cultivation during this year’s Kharif season. The district’s Agricultural Officer, Ajay Kumar Singh, explains that due to a decrease in average rainfall over the past two years, farmers in Gaya district are facing challenges in agriculture. In light of the water scarcity, cultivating coarse grains like millets and maize can be a better option for farmers as they require less water compared to rice cultivation.

Productivity and Duration of Cultivation

The cultivation of coarse grains and maize takes a maximum of 90 to 120 days, while rice cultivation takes a minimum of 120 days. The nutritional value of coarse grains is significantly higher compared to rice, which is why coarse grains have been classified as superfoods. Therefore, this year there is a strong focus on cultivating coarse grains during the Kharif season in Gaya district. The Agriculture Department is urging farmers in areas with low rainfall to concentrate on cultivating coarse grains and is providing subsidies for seed procurement and incentives for cultivation.
