New Law on Hit and Run: Protest at Supaul Bus Stand
Several bus drivers created a ruckus at the Pipra main road, near Supaul city’s bus stand, in opposition to the new law on hit and run. During this protest, the bus drivers parked their buses at the stand, disrupting the operations of all routes. They demonstrated against the Home Minister, expressing their opposition. Sanjay Kumar Sharma, the State President of the Business Welfare Driver Association of India, stated that the government has imposed the task of imposing heavy penalties and a 10-year sentence on drivers through the new law. However, drivers earn only 400-500 rupees per day, making it impossible for them to pay such hefty fines.
Demand to Revoke the Law
The drivers demanded the repeal of the law and gathered at the bus stand to express their dissent. They argued that it is unreasonable to expect them to pay such high fines when they earn a meager daily wage. The new law imposes a 7 lakh rupee fine and a 10-year sentence on drivers involved in hit and run accidents. The drivers believe that this law is unjust and should be reconsidered by the government.
Impact on Bus Operations
The protest at the bus stand caused significant disruption to the operations of all routes. With buses parked at the stand, passengers were unable to travel to their destinations, causing inconvenience and frustration. The drivers’ demonstration aimed to draw attention to their grievances and demand a revision of the new law.
Government Response
The government has yet to respond to the drivers’ protest and demands. It remains to be seen whether they will reconsider the new law on hit and run and address the concerns raised by the drivers. The protest at Supaul bus stand highlights the discontent among bus drivers regarding the heavy penalties imposed on them through this law.
