Manish Kumar, a young entrepreneur from the Rahuwa Mithki Panchayat in Purnia’s Kengar block, said that American people will be eating makhana from Purnia for the first time, as a large order has been received from there. He mentioned that 500 kilograms of makhana has been sent to America, which is a big achievement for the region. This is seen as a positive sign for young entrepreneurs like him, as many other countries will also be receiving this product.
Better quality and lower prices compared to other states: Manish stated that American buyers contacted him, as makhana from other states is more expensive. This makes the taste of Purnia’s makhana preferable. Therefore, an order of 500 kilograms was placed. He mentioned that they directly purchase makhana from the farmers, resulting in lower rates and better quality. He emphasized the importance of maintaining the standard of global products. Apart from America, they also send makhana and makhana powder, which is used for protein shakes, to other countries.
Business expansion over the past five years: Manish explained that after completing his education, he decided to enter this business. He started from farm to factory, with the aim of bringing the product directly from the farmer’s fields to the market, benefiting both the customers and the farmers. He has assembled a team of three people to handle production, sales, and purchasing, and has started expanding his business. Although he started the makhana business in 2017, he began exporting in December 2023. Currently, the profit margin is low at 1%, but they hope to reach up to 5% in the future.
