Increasing Cases of Dog Bites

In recent years, cases of dog bites have been on the rise. Stray dogs roaming the streets in cities like Ghaziabad, Noida, Lucknow, and Delhi have been attacking children and adults. Incidents where dogs already sitting in elevators have bitten children, or elderly people sitting in parks have been attacked, or even pet dogs have injured their owners have been reported. Apart from these cases of dog bites, another major issue is that many patients do not receive proper first aid after being bitten by a dog. Many patients often come to hospitals after treating the bite themselves, using methods like applying turmeric or red chili powder, which can lead to the virus from the dog’s saliva spreading further inside the patient’s body.

National Rabies Control Program Guidelines

According to the National Center for Disease Control Division and the Joint Disease Program, dog bites are 100% fatal. If a victim does not receive treatment in a timely manner, death is inevitable. Negligence regarding dog bites is often seen, resulting in many deaths each year. Therefore, people should avoid doing certain things after being bitten by a dog to prevent fatalities.

Avoiding Common Mistakes After a Dog Bite

Guidelines suggest that one should never touch a dog bite or wound with bare hands. Washing the wound with water should be done using a strong flow of plain water rather than touching it. Ignoring advice to apply irritants like salt, turmeric powder, red chili powder, lemon, alum, or mud to the wound is crucial. Patients should not bandage the wound but leave it open. It is also recommended to avoid certain vegetables like potatoes, tomatoes, coriander, as they can exacerbate the rabies virus. Non-vegetarian foods like meat or chicken should also be avoided, with a preference for simple lentils and bread to prevent complications.
