Gulshan Kashyap/Jamui: Today, India may be a democratic country, but there was a time when it was ruled by kingdoms and different regions were part of different kingdoms. One such region was the Kheira State in the Jamui district of Bihar, which had several villages and farmers. Although Kheira was a part of the Giddhour principality, there were also royal families living here and their stories are popular. Singarpur village is located just 4 kilometers away from the district headquarters of Jamui. The king of this village fell in love with a girl from the village and thereafter, something happened that completely changed the identity of the entire village.

The heart of the king was captivated by the girl from the village. According to the village resident Jaladhar Singh, the king used to pass through the village on his horseback frequently. In one such instance, when the king was passing by, his eyes fell upon a girl who was doing her household chores. The king was mesmerized by the girl’s unique beauty. When he reached his palace, he expressed his desire to marry the girl. The king ordered his soldiers to go and bring the girl. However, when the soldiers came to take the girl, she and her family refused to accept the king’s condition. After this, the king ordered the destruction of their house. The elephants and soldiers destroyed the girl’s house.

The family of the girl, who were going to another principality, told Jaladhar that they no longer wanted to stay in Kheira State after their house was destroyed and that they would go to another principality. The king, on the other hand, imposed stricter rules. Besides collecting taxes from this village, he also imposed an additional tax. The villagers had to give silver coins to the king as taxes. Through this tax, the king wanted to punish the villagers.

Jaladhar mentioned that after some local soldiers and villagers explained the situation, the girl’s family decided to stay here. They thought it was better to pay the additional tax than to get their daughter married to the king. Jaladhar’s ancestors used to say that the money from the taxes of this village was used to adorn the queen. Since then, the village came to be known as Shringarpur and later it started to be known as Singarpur.
