Increasing cultivation of special wheat varieties in Sitamarhi district
In Sitamarhi district, a special kind of wheat is being cultivated which has been produced for centuries. This wheat, known as Sonamoti wheat, is different from the common wheat found in the market and fetches a higher price, ranging from 80 to 100 rupees per kilogram. Another variety, Vanshi wheat, is the most expensive, selling for 100 to 120 rupees per kilogram.
Ancient origins and benefits of special wheat varieties
It is believed that the cultivation of these special wheat varieties dates back to the Harappan civilization. These wheat varieties are less susceptible to diseases and are beneficial for nutrition and health. Farmers require less investment and effort to produce these varieties, which offer high productivity.
Promotion of traditional wheat seeds in Bihar
The agriculture department in Bihar is promoting the cultivation of traditional wheat varieties like Sonamoti, Vanshi, and Tipua wheat across all districts. These varieties mature quickly and offer high yields, making them resilient to climate change. Farmers in 17 blocks of the district have started cultivating these varieties with encouraging results in crop yields and quality.
