Story of Shilanath Temple
The story of Shilanath Temple, one of the nine holy places of Lord Shiva, is quite fascinating. It is said that the birth of Shiva and Parvati (Ardhanarishwar) took place at this location on the banks of Kamla River. Despite leaving the place during a fierce flood, Bhairav stayed behind. Many myths and legends in Mithila are enchanting, but the tale we are about to share today is truly extraordinary.
History and Donations
Local priests claim that the history of this temple is quite mystical. Before the Kali Yuga began, Shiva’s Ardhanarishwar form appeared at this spot from the stream. Maharaja of Darbhanga donated 36 acres of land for the renovation of the temple. Currently, different families of priests reside on the premises. Devotees visit daily to worship Shiva, with Mondays being particularly grand. During fairs, pilgrims offer water from the Kamla River to Shilanath Mahadev.
Worship and Location
Apart from Shiva, other deities like Mata Parvati, Sita, Radha Krishna, and various gods and goddesses are worshipped here. There is also a Yajna Kund for conducting rituals. If you wish to visit this beautiful place, head to Madhubani first, which is about 30 kilometers from the city. Madhubani is the last town in Bihar before the border with Nepal, where you can easily travel to the famous city of Janakpur, the birthplace of Mata Sita.
