Supreme Court Halts High Court Order in Bihar Land Registration Case

If you have been facing issues with the new rules for buying and selling land, there is good news for you. The Supreme Court has put a stop to the Patna High Court’s order which stated that a ‘jamabandi’ (land record) is necessary for land registration. Now, land registration in Bihar can be done without a ‘jamabandi’. Since the issuance of the High Court’s new order, there has been a significant decrease in property registrations.

Relief for People as Supreme Court Stops High Court Order

People were troubled by the requirement to get ‘jamabandi’ in their name for registration. The matter reached the Supreme Court and the apex court has halted the Patna High Court’s order. However, a detailed hearing on this issue has been scheduled for the next date in September.

Increase in Registrations Expected After Rule Change

After the enforcement of mandatory ‘jamabandi’ rule in February 2024, there was a drastic decrease in land registrations across all registry offices. The revenue of the registration department dropped by nearly 80% in March. The implementation of the rule led to a significant drop in the number of registrations, causing various issues for the government and the people. The Supreme Court’s decision to halt the order has brought relief to many, with hopes for an increase in registrations in the future.
