IFS SP Shahi: The Man Behind India’s Only Wolf Sanctuary
IFS officer SP Shahi has played a crucial role in the creation of India’s only wolf sanctuary, the Mahuadand Wolf Sanctuary in Latehar, Jharkhand. Through his efforts, this sanctuary was established in 1976 and has become the home to approximately 31,000 wolves.
Became Wood Supply Officer in 1942
SP Shahi joined the Forest Department of the Government of Bihar as a timber supply officer in 1942. At the age of 43, he became the country’s first and youngest Chief Conservator of Forests in 1960. He served as a Forest Officer until his retirement in 1976.
Years of Hard Work for Wolf Conservation
During his tenure as a Forest Officer, SP Shahi dedicated many years of hard work to establish Mahuadand as a wolf sanctuary for the protection of these animals. Finally, in 1976, this 63.25 square kilometer forest area was officially declared as a wolf sanctuary.
Worked Even After Retirement
SP Shahi’s passion for wolf conservation continued even after his retirement. He actively worked towards the overall ecology of Mahuadand, including the care and breeding of wolf parks. Unfortunately, he passed away in 1986, leaving behind a significant setback in wolf conservation efforts in India.

1942 में लकड़ी आपूर्ति अधिकारी बने
एसपी शाही ने 1942 में ब्यूरोक्रेसी में प्रवेश किया। उन्हें बिहार सरकार के वन विभाग में लकड़ी आपूर्ति अधिकारी के रूप में नियुक्त किया गया। 1960 में, 43 वर्ष की उम्र में, महाल ने देश के पहले और सबसे युवा मुख्य वन संरक्षक के रूप में पदभार संभाला। उन्होंने 1976 में सेवा निवृत्ति तक वन अधिकारी के रूप में देश की सेवा की।
भेड़िया संरक्षण के लिए कठिन काम के साल
वन अधिकारी के पद पर रहते हुए एसपी शाही ने कई सालों तक भेड़ियों की संरक्षा के लिए महुआडंड को भेड़िया संरक्षणस्थल के रूप में घोषित करने के लिए कठिन काम किया। अंततः वर्ष 1976 में वह दिन आया जब इस 63.25 वर्ग किलोमीटर वन क्षेत्र को भेड़िया संरक्षणस्थल के रूप में घोषित किया गया।
सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद भी काम किया
एसपी शाही को भेड़िया संरक्षण इतना पसंद था कि वह सेवानिवृत्ति के बाद भी इसके लिए काम करते रहे। उन्होंने भेड़िया पार्कों की देखभाल और प्रजनन सहित महुआडंड के समग्र पारिस्थितिकी के लिए काम किया। उन्होंने 1986 में इस दुनिया को अलविदा कह दिया। भारत में भेड़िया संरक्षण के प्रयासों को बड़ा झटका लगा।
