Tremors Felt in Bihar and Eastern India, No Major Damage Reported; Calm Restored After Earthquake Scare

On Friday morning, around 10 am, people in Kishanganj and Araria districts of Bihar felt earthquake tremors. The sudden shaking scared many, prompting them to rush out of their homes. For a few moments, there was confusion as fans and doors rattled, but thankfully, no injuries or damage were reported in these areas.

The earthquake had its epicenter in Narsindi, Bangladesh, located about 42 kilometers from Dhaka. It registered a magnitude of 5.6 on the Richter scale. The tremors were felt at 10:38 am local time, and the depth was around 10 kilometers. Unfortunately, this caused significant destruction in Bangladesh, with reports confirming 10 deaths and over 100 injuries.

Buildings in several areas of Bangladesh developed cracks, and fires broke out in some places following the quake. The areas most affected included Dhaka, Narsindi, and Narayanganj. In Dhaka’s industrial area of Ghazipur, many workers were hurt in the panic to escape, and some people were trapped in staircases as they rushed out. Eyewitnesses described how buildings swayed during the tremors.

The tremors also reached the International Stadium in Dhaka, interrupting a Test match between Bangladesh and Ireland for a short time. Fortunately, there was no damage to the stadium, and the match resumed afterward. The interim administration of Bangladesh has urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors while assuring that necessary help will be provided.

In India, tremors were felt across various eastern and northeastern states. People in Kolkata, Assam, Tripura, and Meghalaya evacuated their homes and offices as a precaution. The Indian administration confirmed that there were no significant damages or casualties reported anywhere in the country.
