The Ular Surya Temple, located in the Dulhin Bazaar area of Patna, organizes a grand fair on the occasion of Chhath. The history of this temple is associated with the Dwapara Yuga, where Maharaja Shambh, the son of Lord Krishna, built it to cure leprosy. It is believed that there are 11 Surya temples in India and one in Pakistan, all built by Maharaja Shambh in the Dwapara Yuga. The evidence of the construction of the Surya temple in 12 different places based on the 12 zodiac signs is mentioned in the Shambh Puran.
According to the legend, Maharishi Garg cursed King Shambh, causing him to suffer from leprosy. King Shambh, known for his arrogance, did not greet Maharishi Garg nor give him way while bathing in a pond with some women. This angered Maharishi Garg, who then cursed King Shambh with leprosy. Distressed by this, King Shambh sought a solution.
It is said that once Narad Muni noticed the transformed appearance of King Shambh and asked him the reason behind it. After hearing his story, Narad Muni promised to help him find a way to be free from the curse. Narad Muni performed worship and asked Lord Krishna for guidance.
