Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary announced a major update for the state aviation sector. A tender worth Rs 38.64 crore is now officially issued for the development and upgradation of the Valmiki Nagar Airport in West Champaran. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is overseeing this project, which moves the airport from the planning stage to active construction. This step aims to connect the region to the national aviation map under the UDAN scheme.

What new facilities will be built at the airport?
The government allocated this fund to construct several key infrastructure components necessary for commercial flight operations. The local administration in Bagaha-II processed the acquisition of 12 acres of additional land for the runway expansion and terminal area. The airport is currently being developed to support specific commercial operations.
- A new Terminal Building designed to handle passengers for regional flights.
- A dedicated Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower for safe flight management.
- A modern Fire Station to meet all required aviation safety standards.
- Initial capacity to handle Code-2B category aircraft, which are typically 19-seater commercial planes.
How will this airport benefit the public and local tourism?
The primary goal of upgrading this airport is to provide direct air access to the Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), the only tiger reserve in Bihar. This direct connectivity will reduce travel time from Patna and other major hubs, encouraging more eco-tourism in the area. The project is expected to create local employment and bring growth to the hospitality and transport sectors in West Champaran.
Furthermore, this development is part of the state government plan to expand aviation infrastructure across 10 districts. Authorities are also working on similar aviation expansion projects in Munger, Muzaffarpur, and Saharsa alongside the Valmiki Nagar initiative.
