Medical Negligence in Muzaffarpur
During a surgery in the Sakra Thana area of Muzaffarpur, a woman named Sunita had both her kidneys removed last year. The doctor involved, Pawan Kumar, is currently in judicial custody. Another main accused doctor, R.K. Singh, is still on the run. Sunita’s health has not improved since the incident, and she was admitted to SKMCH with deteriorating health.
Operation Gone Wrong
Sunita initially visited Dr. Pawan Kumar’s clinic in Baji Rout village in the Sakra Thana area due to abdominal pain. The doctor advised her to undergo a surgery to remove her uterus. Sunita’s family agreed and the operation took place at Shubhakant Clinic in Bariyarpur on September 3, 2022. However, her condition worsened post-surgery, leading to her being transferred to Shrikrishna Medical College and Hospital.
Allegations and Complaints
Following the surgery, it was discovered that both of Sunita’s kidneys had been removed. Her family had raised concerns about the surgery, as she was initially only supposed to undergo a uterus removal operation. Complaints were lodged against the clinic director, Pawan Kumar, and the doctors involved in the operation. A case was filed under the Human Parts Transplant Act and the SC-ST Act at the Bariyarpur police station.
Victim’s Testimony
Sunita revealed that the doctors had informed her that there was a mass in her abdomen that needed to be removed, but ended up taking out her kidneys during the operation. She also mentioned that they charged her Rs. 30,000 for the surgery. The incident has raised questions about medical negligence and malpractice in the region, leading to a legal investigation into the matter.
