Delhi Mumbai Expressway Construction Progress
The construction of a 1,300-kilometer long expressway between Delhi and Mumbai is nearly complete. According to Nitin Gadkari, the Minister of Road Transport and Highways, the 245-kilometer section in Madhya Pradesh is finished, with seven toll plazas set up for toll collection. Traffic has now begun on this expressway in India.
Agency Leaves Toll Collection
Initially, NHAI estimated that 50,000 to 60,000 vehicles would pass through the expressway daily, but currently only 3,000 to 4,000 vehicles do so. As a result, the first agency responsible for toll collection left within a month. The government has now awarded toll collection to a second agency at a reduced rate, but it is still facing losses.
Traffic Flow on the Expressway
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway passes through Jhabua, Ratlam, and Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh. While vehicle traffic has resumed on the expressway, recent days have seen significantly lower traffic. The expensive tolls on the expressway are considered responsible for the low traffic flow. Currently, only three to four thousand vehicles pass through, generating a toll tax of 9 lakh rupees per day.
Connectivity with Various Cities
The Delhi-Mumbai Expressway will connect Sohna in Haryana to Maharashtra via Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. This highway will provide connectivity to cities like Jaipur, Ajmer, Kota, Udaipur, Bhopal, Indore, Surat, and more. Once completed, the distance from Delhi to Surat via road will be reduced to less than 800 kilometers.
