Delhi-Katra Green Field Expressway, a part of the Bharatmala project, is currently under construction at a fast pace. It is claimed that 75% of the work for Package 1 and Package 2, which starts from the village of Nilothi in Bahadurgarh, has been completed. The plan is to open it by March 2024, with the expectation of vehicles filling the expressway within four months. The completion of the expressway is scheduled for March 2024 in Jammu and June 2025 in Katra.
Foreign-style facilities on the expressway
Officials claim that the expressway will have facilities similar to those in foreign countries. These will include food, vehicle maintenance, petrol pumps, and restrooms equipped with CNG and EV (electric vehicle) charging facilities.
Emergency assistance and convenience centers
To provide emergency assistance, there will be teams of ambulances, fire brigades, trauma centers, and traffic police available on the expressway 24/7. Three convenience centers are being established in Sonipat, near Rukhi, Noornakhera, and Chhavdi village.
Project cost and length
Out of the 21 packages, five are being constructed in Haryana. The total cost of the project is INR 39,000 crore, with a total length of 670 km. The main expressway is 570 km long, the Greenfield Expressway from Nilothi to Gurudaspur will be 397.712 km, and the Brownfield Expressway from Gurudaspur to Katra will be 122.288 km.
Benefits of the expressway
The travel time from Nakodar to Amritsar will be reduced to 99 km. The journey from Delhi to Katra will be made easier, benefiting pilgrims visiting Mata Vaishno Devi. The expressway will allow a speed of 120 km per hour, enabling travelers to reach Katra in six hours. It will also help reduce traffic pressure on NH-44 from Sonipat to Delhi.
Progress on Katra Expressway
The construction of the Katra Expressway is progressing at a war footing. Work has started to install guardrails on flyovers, with 75% of the work already completed. The road is expected to be open for vehicles soon.
