Delhi-Katra Green Field Expressway, a part of the Bharatmala project, is being constructed at a fast pace. 75% of the work on Package 1 and Package 2, starting from Nilothi village in Bahadurgarh, has been completed. The plan is to open the expressway by March 2024, with the expectation that vehicles will start using it within four months. The project aims to complete the construction in Jammu by March 2024 and in Katra by June 2025.
The expressway is said to have facilities inspired by international standards. It will include amenities like food outlets, vehicle maintenance, petrol pumps, and restrooms equipped with CNG and EV (electric vehicle) charging facilities. Emergency services such as ambulances, fire brigades, trauma centers, and traffic police teams will be available 24/7 on the expressway, with three service centers being set up in Sonipat.
The project consists of 21 packages, with five of them being constructed in Haryana. The total cost of the project is estimated to be Rs. 39,000 crore, covering a length of 670 km. The main expressway is 570 km long, with the Greenfield Expressway from Nilothi to Gurudaspur being 397.712 km long and the Brownfield Expressway from Gurudaspur to Katra being 122.288 km long.
The benefits of this expressway include a speed of 120 km per hour, which will allow travelers to reach Katra in just six hours. It will also help reduce traffic congestion on NH-44 in Sonipat and provide new connectivity routes to Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, the construction work on the Katra Expressway is progressing at a war footing, with flyovers and guardrails being installed. Soon, vehicles will be able to use the road.
