Delhi-Katra Green Field Expressway, a part of the Bharatmala project, is being constructed at a fast pace. 75% of the work for Package 1 and Package 2, which starts from the village of Nilothi in Bahadurgarh, has been completed. The plan is to open the expressway by March 2024, with the expectation of vehicles filling it up within four months. The completion of the project is scheduled for March 2024 in Jammu and June 2025 in Katra.
The expressway will have facilities similar to those found in foreign countries. It will include service centers with amenities such as food, vehicle maintenance, petrol pumps, and restrooms equipped with CNG and electric vehicle charging facilities. Teams of ambulances, fire brigades, trauma centers, and traffic police will be available 24/7 for emergency assistance. Three such facilities will be established in Sonipat near Rukhi, Noornakhera, and Chhavdi villages.
The project has a total cost of 39,000 crores and is divided into 21 packages, with five of them being constructed in Haryana. The expressway spans a total length of 670 kilometers, with the main expressway being 570 kilometers long. The Greenfield Expressway from Nilothi to Gurudaspur will be 397.712 kilometers long, while the Brownfield Expressway from Gurudaspur to Katra will be 122.288 kilometers long.
The Greenfield Expressway will make travel from Delhi to Katra easier, with a journey time of six hours and a speed of 120 kilometers per hour. It will also reduce traffic congestion on NH-44 in Sonipat. Additionally, the new route will connect Chandigarh, Punjab, and Jammu and Kashmir. The expressway will provide connectivity to five locations in Sonipat. Construction work on the Katra Expressway is progressing at a war footing, with 75% of the work completed. Flyovers are being built, and soon cars will be running on the road. Garden work has also begun on the flyovers, and entry will be provided from KM-P to the toll booths near Hasanpur village, which is 8 kilometers away from Nilothi village.
