Delhi-NCR is currently experiencing heavy fog and poor visibility on the roads. Many areas are witnessing zero visibility for the first time this season. Commuters on the Noida Expressway are facing a lot of trouble with vehicles being barely visible at 6 am in the morning. The cold weather is also taking its toll with dense fog reported in Safdarjung at 50 meters and Palam at 125 meters.
Amritsar airport in Punjab reported zero visibility, while Patiala, Bareilly, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Varanasi, and Jhansi recorded visibility ranging from 25 to 200 meters. Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh reported 200 meters of visibility, while Ganganagar in Rajasthan, Safdarjung in Delhi, and Palam in Delhi reported 50 meters and 125 meters respectively. Train and flight schedules in the national capital are also running late due to the dense fog, affecting around 110 domestic and international flights.
Videos show drivers using their headlights and parking lights to navigate through the dense fog on Delhi’s Zakir Hussain Marg. The India Meteorological Department has reported dense fog in several parts of northern India including Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, northern Rajasthan, and northern Madhya Pradesh.
Several trains have been running late due to the fog. The New Delhi-Ranchi Garib Rath Express is delayed by 12 hours, while the New Delhi-Sialkot Rajdhani Express, New Delhi-Kolkata Rajdhani Express, and New Delhi-Bhubaneswar Rajdhani Express are all delayed by 10 hours. Other trains experiencing delays include the Bikaner-Sialkot Duronto Express, New Delhi-Hawrah Duronto Express, Anand Vihar-Jayanagar Garib Rath Express, New Delhi-Hawrah Poorva Express, New Delhi-Patna Sampurna Kranti Express, Anand Vihar-Danapur Jan Sadharan Express, Bengaluru City-Danapur Humsafar Express, Yeshvantpur-Patliputra Express, New Delhi-Islampur Magadh Express, New Delhi-Puri Purushottam Express, and Brahmaputra Mail.
On Tuesday, many flights and trains were delayed due to dense fog. Delhi recorded a maximum temperature of 23.8 degrees Celsius, with several areas experiencing poor visibility and ‘very poor’ air quality. The airport authorities stated that around 30 flights, including international ones, were delayed due to fog and reduced visibility. 14 trains also experienced delays in arrival due to fog.
On Wednesday morning, Safdarjung reported 200 meters of visibility and Palam reported 100 meters at 5:30 am. At the IGI Airport, visibility was recorded at 50 meters at 10 am. The runway visibility range (RVR) was between 125 and 275 meters due to dense fog. The minimum temperature was recorded at 7 degrees Celsius, which is one degree below normal. The 24-hour average air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 378 at 4 pm. The weather office has issued a warning for dense to very dense fog on Wednesday and Thursday mornings with clear skies during the day.
