Delhi-NCR will receive several gifts in the form of road connectivity in the coming year. By 2024, three expressways and one six-lane connector will be launched, with hopes of reducing the daily traffic congestion of 1-1.2 million vehicles on the internal roads of Delhi-NCR.
The 210-kilometer long Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (Economic Corridor) will be completed by November 2024. The first phase, which is 14 kilometers long and falls within the Delhi border, will be completed by May 15. The second package, from Loni Border to Khekra in Baghpat district, is expected to be ready in March, while the remaining nine packages will be completed by November 2024. The opening of the expressway will reduce traffic on the roads of East Delhi, as it will provide access to the expressway at five locations in Delhi, including Akshardham and Signature Bridge.
Relief will be provided through the Urban Extension Road. The 80-kilometer long Long Urban Extension Road-2 has already been completed and is expected to be opened between June and July. It will also connect the IGI Airport, allowing vehicles coming from Singh Border and Faridabad to reach the airport without getting stuck in traffic jams.
Currently, Delhi-Mumbai Expressway requires crossing through the entire Delhi and Gurugram, as it starts from Sohna. However, by 2024, Delhi will be directly connected to the expressway. The construction of a 60-kilometer long connector is underway and it can be completed by August.
The Delhi-Gurugram border is currently the biggest traffic jam point. The Dwarka Expressway, which is being constructed as a bypass for the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway, will be completed before May. This 29-kilometer long four-lane expressway will reduce the traffic congestion of 300,000 PCUs (passenger car units) per day on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway. The expressway starts from Shiv Murti Chowk in the Delhi border, passes through the airport and Dwarka, and ends at the Khedki Dausa Toll Plaza on the Delhi-Jaipur National Highway.
Vehicles will be able to pass without stopping at Anand Vihar. The flyover connecting Anand Vihar to Apsara Border will be completed by April, providing relief from traffic jams at two red lights. The underpass connecting Ring Road to Bhairav Marg will also be completed by February, reducing traffic congestion at Progress Maidan Tunnel and providing relief to approximately 150,000 vehicles coming from New Delhi towards Ring Road.
