Delhi’s Department of Transportation has prepared a plan to provide subsidies of up to 50,000 rupees to those who scrap their four-wheeler vehicles that have completed their lifespan. The plan has been sent to the Delhi government’s finance department for approval. It aims to encourage people to scrap their old vehicles in large numbers so that they can be removed from the streets. Additionally, officials from the transportation department suggest that subsidies should also be given for the purchase of new vehicles as a tax relief. The plan involves public expenditure as subsidies.
Following a court order, the government has formulated a policy for scrapping vehicles. The policy includes different slabs for goods transport and private vehicles. In the capital, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are not permitted to operate on the roads. Approximately 5.5 million vehicles have been scrapped in Delhi so far. Meanwhile, around 630,000 vehicle owners have obtained NOCs from the transportation department to register their vehicles outside the capital. Currently, there are around 200,000 vehicles that have completed their lifespan but are still running on Delhi’s roads.
Subsidies will only be provided to those who actually scrap their vehicles. After scrapping, the vehicle owner will be issued a certificate. When they go to purchase a new vehicle, they will need to show this certificate, and then they will be eligible for the subsidy of 50,000 rupees.
