Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
On 26th February, Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation for 550 Amrit Bharat stations, aiming to improve facilities at railway stations by developing ‘Roof Plazas’ and city centers at a cost of Rs 40,000 crore. During the event, around 1,500 overbridges and underbridges will also be laid on roads in various states. More than 2,000 railway stations will be digitally integrated into the event through video conferencing.
School Children Participation
Nearly 50,000 school children will be awarded during the event. Students from 4,000 schools participated in competitions such as speeches, essays, and poetry writing on the theme ‘Railways of Developed India by 2047’ organized by Indian Railways. Around 400,000 students participated in various competitions and approximately 50,000 awards will be given during the event.
Roof Plazas Construction
The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme was initiated to develop Indian railway stations. The concept of ‘Roof Plazas’ involves developing spaces on the roofs or upper parts of stations for a food court, play area for children, and selling local products.
Facilities and Accessibility
The stations will be equipped with better accessibility, waiting areas, restrooms, lifts or escalators, cleanliness, free Wi-Fi, kiosks for local products, and improved passenger information systems. The plan includes creating executive lounges and specific business meeting places at each station, along with provisions for facilities for differently-abled individuals, integration of stations at both ends of cities, multi-modal integration, and provisions for barrier-free tracks and rooftop plazas.
