Doctors at AIIMS Patna have achieved a significant medical milestone by saving the life of a 3-year-old boy. The child was suffering from a rare and aggressive form of liver cancer known as Hepatoblastoma. On February 15, 2026, a team of specialized surgeons performed a complex operation that lasted for over seven hours. The hospital administration confirmed that the surgery was successful, and the child is currently recovering well under close medical supervision.

How was the complex surgery performed?

The medical procedure was highly technical and required precise execution. Doctors performed a Right Hemihepatectomy, which involved removing the entire right half of the liver where the tumor was located. The surgical team utilized advanced monitoring systems and dissection techniques to minimize blood loss. This ensured that the remaining portion of the liver could continue to function properly. Officials stated that such delicate paediatric oncological procedures are usually available only at a few specialized centers across the country.

Who were the doctors involved in the team?

The operation was led by the Department of Paediatric Surgery at AIIMS Patna. The team included Dr. Amit Kumar Sinha, Dr. Saurav Srivastava, Dr. Amit Kumar, Dr. Rashi, Dr. Digamber Chaubey, and Dr. Gaurav. They were supported by experts from the Gastrosurgery department, including Dr. Utpal Anand and Dr. Basant. Dr. Chandni from Paediatric Anaesthesia managed the critical task of keeping the young patient stable during the long procedure. During the same surgery, the doctors also corrected two other birth defects, Meckel’s diverticulum and an inguinal hernia, giving the child a completely fresh start.
