Travelers in Bihar are set to get a major relief with the construction of the Amas-Darbhanga Expressway. This new road project is moving ahead rapidly and aims to cut travel time significantly. Once operational, the journey between Gaya and Darbhanga will take only about 2.5 to 3 hours, which currently takes 5 to 6 hours. Recent official reports confirm that nearly 60 percent of the construction work is already finished.

The expressway, officially designated as NH-119D, spans approximately 189 kilometers. It starts from Amas in the Aurangabad district on the Delhi-Kolkata highway and ends at Bela Nawada in Darbhanga. This route connects South Bihar to North Bihar through the upcoming Kachchi Dargah-Bidupur bridge.

Seven districts will directly benefit from this project:

  • Aurangabad
  • Gaya
  • Jehanabad
  • Nalanda
  • Patna
  • Vaishali
  • Darbhanga

Completion date and project features

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has set a target to complete the project by December 2026. However, officials expect some sections to open for traffic by mid-2026. The estimated cost for this infrastructure project is between ₹5,000 and ₹6,000 crore.

This will be an access-controlled expressway, meaning vehicles can only enter and exit at specific points. It is designed for speeds up to 120 km/h. Initially, it will be a 4-lane highway, but there is a provision to expand it to 6 lanes in the future. This road will also provide faster connectivity to airports in Gaya, Patna, and Darbhanga.
