The political landscape in Bihar is shifting significantly as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar prepares to move to the Rajya Sabha. Following his nomination filing on March 5, reports indicate he will likely resign from the CM post by April 10, 2026. This transition paves the way for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to appoint its own Chief Minister in the state for the first time. Union Home Minister Amit Shah was present in Patna during the nomination process, signaling a smooth transfer of power within the NDA alliance.

Who are the top contenders for the Chief Minister post?

The race for the top chair has narrowed down to three prominent BJP leaders. The party is looking to balance caste equations and administrative experience while selecting the new face for Bihar.

  • Samrat Choudhary: Currently serving as Deputy CM, he is a strong leader from the Kushwaha community and heads the state unit. His organizational strength makes him a frontrunner.
  • Nityanand Rai: The Union Minister of State for Home Affairs is seen as a key Yadav face for the party and is central to the BJP’s strategy in the state.
  • Vijay Kumar Sinha: An experienced leader with strong organizational backing, he currently holds the Deputy CM position and is viewed as a reliable choice.

Apart from these names, sources suggest the central leadership might also play a “surprise card” by appointing a woman or an EBC leader to the top post.

What changes are expected in the new cabinet?

A major reshuffle in the ministry portfolios is expected alongside the leadership change. Reports suggest that Nitish Kumar’s son, Nishant Kumar, is set to make his political debut and may take oath as a Deputy Chief Minister to keep the JD(U) base intact. The BJP, now the single largest party with 89 seats, is expected to keep crucial departments like the Home Portfolio and General Administration. This new government formation aims to focus heavily on law and order and industrial growth in the state.
