The Bihar government has officially increased the budget for purchasing government vehicles for its ministers, judges, and senior administrative and police officers. A new notification from the Finance Department issued on March 28, 2026, confirms that ministers and High Court judges are now eligible for vehicles costing up to 37 lakh. The move aims to replace older fleets with modern, high-tech vehicles while accounting for the significant rise in automobile prices in recent years.

Revised Budget Limits for Official Vehicles in Bihar

The state government has divided the officials into five distinct tiers to manage the vehicle purchase ceiling. The new limits include the on-road cost, registration, and necessary accessories. Below are the updated budget allocations for various ranks:

Official Designation Old Limit New Limit
Ministers and High Court Judges 30 Lakh 37 Lakh
Addl. Chief Secretary, Principal Secretary, and Secretaries 25 Lakh 30 Lakh
District Magistrates (DM) and District Judges 20 Lakh 22 Lakh
Superintendents of Police (SP) 16 Lakh 18 Lakh
Other Lower Tier Entitled Officers 14 Lakh 16 Lakh

Reasoning and Implementation of the New Policy

The decision to hike the budget follows a review by the Administrative Cadre Committee, which was chaired by the Chief Secretary. The Finance Department pointed out that previous limits set in early 2020 had become outdated because of the rising prices of modern SUVs and luxury cars. Officials believe these changes are necessary to provide modern facilities and ensure the safety and efficiency of high-ranking authorities during their official duties.

With the updated budget, various departments are expected to procure modern vehicle models like the Toyota Innova Hycross and Mahindra XUV700 for their senior leadership. This update is applicable to all eligible government officials who are entitled to state-provided transportation. The notification takes effect immediately for all new vehicle procurement requests across the Bihar administration and police departments.
