The shortage of LPG gas cylinders in Bihar has created widespread public distress due to rumors related to tensions in the Middle East. Panic buying and black marketing by distributors have led to massive queues starting as early as 5 AM. The situation has heavily impacted daily life, forcing schools in Patna to halt mid-day meals and prominent restaurants to scale down their menus. In response, the administration has stepped in with strict actions to ensure regular supply to domestic consumers.

How the LPG Shortage is Affecting Daily Life in Bihar

The non-availability of commercial cylinders has severely hit government schools in Patna. Many schools have switched to traditional cooking methods like wood and coal to prepare meals for students. Commercial establishments are also facing a major crisis. Restaurants and eateries in Patna have temporarily shut down sections of their menus. The Mahavir Mandir reported having only one week of commercial gas stock left for its free meal program.

In districts like Aurangabad, Kaimur, and Gaya, massive crowds are gathering at distributor points. The situation became tense in Sheohar when a man threatened suicide after failing to get a cylinder after hours of waiting. Consumers are currently reporting a 7 to 8-day backlog for domestic cylinder deliveries across Patna, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur.

What Are the New Rules and Government Actions

To control the black marketing of LPG gas, the Central and State governments have invoked the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA). Development Commissioner Mihir Kumar Singh has directed local authorities to take legal action against distributors found overcharging or diverting domestic cylinders. Deputy CM Samrat Choudhary has assured the public that the state has adequate domestic LPG stock and urged people to ignore rumors of a total shortage.

  • The minimum wait time for booking a domestic LPG refill is now extended from 21 days to 25 days to prevent stockpiling.
  • No cylinder will be delivered without an OTP to ensure it reaches the registered consumer.
  • Patna District Magistrate Tyagarajan S. M. has formed 28 enforcement squads to conduct surprise inspections at gas agency warehouses.
  • A dedicated control room and helpline number 0612-2219810 is active in Patna from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM for LPG-related complaints.
  • Bihar Police Special Branch is increasing patrols around petrol pumps and LPG godowns.
