Old Age Pension: Haryana Government Resolves Doubts in the Assembly Over Cutting Elderly Pension

The Haryana government has put to rest the doubts surrounding the cutting of old age pensions in the state assembly. From now on, elderly citizens with an annual income of up to INR 3.5 lakh will not have their pensions deducted. However, those with higher incomes may still face pension cuts. The government has already halted pensions for elderly individuals earning above the prescribed limit.

Until now, the opposition has continuously accused the government of cutting pensions for individuals with incomes up to INR 2 lakh. The government has clarified that these allegations are false. The state government is now making efforts to provide significant relief to senior citizens through the pension scheme. They are planning to increase the income limit for pension eligibility. The final decision regarding the limit will be made in a cabinet meeting. Currently, only senior citizens earning up to INR 1.8 lakh annually are eligible for pensions.

The Haryana government has stated in the assembly that pensions are linked with the Family Identity Card (FIC). Therefore, the government already has access to information regarding annual incomes of individuals mentioned in the FIC, which should be INR 3.5 lakh or higher. In order to address any issues faced by the public, the government has also provided an opportunity to rectify errors in the FIC. Any corrections made will be verified afterwards.

Congress legislator Pradeep Chaudhary raised the issue of pension cuts in the assembly. Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Om Prakash Yadav stated that only those beneficiaries with an annual income of INR 3.5 lakh or more have had their pensions stopped. Senior citizens themselves have provided the government with the income figures while registering for the FIC.
