A routine training mission turned into a heartbreaking tragedy for the Indian Air Force and the family of Squadron Leader Anuj Vashisht. The brave pilot, who was set to get married in just a few days, lost his life along with Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar when their Su-30 MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam. The incident has left the defence community in shock and turned wedding preparations at Vashisht’s Gurugram home into deep mourning.

Details of the Crash Near Jorhat Airbase
The accident took place on the evening of March 5, 2026. The twin-engine Su-30 MKI aircraft took off from the Jorhat Air Force Station for a routine training sortie. According to officials, the jet lost contact with radar at around 7:42 PM. The wreckage was later located in the Karbi Anglong district, roughly 60 km from the airbase.
The Indian Air Force confirmed the loss the next day, stating that both pilots sustained fatal injuries during the crash. This incident marks the 13th known major accident for the Su-30 MKI fleet since its induction. The IAF has expressed sincere condolences and stated they stand firmly with the bereaved families.
Wedding Joy Turns to Sorrow for Vashisht Family
At Squadron Leader Anuj Vashisht’s home in Sector 22B, Gurugram, the atmosphere shifted instantly from celebration to grief. Family members were busy making arrangements for his wedding, which was scheduled to take place in a few days. His fiancee is also a pilot. Reports suggest that his mother was initially not told about his death but was informed he was injured, as the family struggled to break the devastating news. Relatives have rushed to Assam to bring his mortal remains home.

Both pilots belonged to the 47 Squadron stationed at Jorhat and were highly skilled officers.
- Squadron Leader Anuj Vashisht: Originally from Bhiwani, Haryana, he completed his schooling in Gurugram and was known for his dedication to serving the nation.
- Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar: An experienced officer who had participated in Operation Sindoor, India’s military action against terror installations in 2025.
