Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) in Patna achieved a major milestone by successfully performing Bihar first robotic surgery for pancreatic cancer. A 71-year-old patient from Darbhanga underwent this advanced procedure which usually costs lakhs in private hospitals. The surgery was completed by a specialized team of six doctors with minimal blood loss and a shorter recovery period than traditional methods.

Medical Superintendent Dr. Manish Mandal confirmed that robotic assistance reduced the operation time and surgical complications significantly.

Cost Benefits and Important Information for Patients

This development makes advanced cancer treatment affordable for the common man in Bihar. The hospital management has shared specific details regarding the costs and facilities available for such robotic procedures:

Feature Details
Robotic Surgery Cost Approximately 50,000 Rupees
Traditional Surgery Cost Around 1 Lakh Rupees at IGIMS
Patient Origin Wajidpur, Darbhanga
Primary Advantage Less blood loss and shorter ICU stay
Ayushman Bharat Not covered under this scheme
Future Plans Expansion to Pediatric Surgery

Director Dr. Binde Kumar stated that IGIMS will now offer complex robotic surgeries across various departments at affordable rates. This move aims to reduce the need for patients to travel to other states for expensive treatments. While the precision of AI and robotics helps in better diagnosis and lower infection risks, patients should note that these specific robotic procedures are currently outside the scope of the Ayushman Bharat health scheme.
