The protest by parents at the IIT Patna campus regarding the Foundation Academy dispute ended on April 3, 2026. This decision followed a formal assurance from DSP-2 Amarendra Kumar Jha, providing a temporary resolution to a situation that has impacted the academic lives of approximately 800 students. The dispute remains a critical issue for families of IIT personnel, Air Force, and NDRF staff whose children study at the institution.

Why did the protest happen at the IIT Patna campus?

The conflict began when the IIT Patna management issued a notice to close Foundation Academy, which had been operating on the campus since 2016. Although a 33-year agreement was in place with the Vivashwan Educational and Welfare Society, the IIT administration allegedly ordered the school to shut down by late March 2026. Parents and teachers claimed that students were denied entry to the premises even after the Patna High Court issued an interim stay on the closure order on April 1. Tensions rose when reports suggested that the school board was being changed and new admissions were being blocked.

Current Status and High Court Directions

The Patna High Court has intervened in the matter, staying the closure order and instructing that the new academic session should proceed without hindrance. The court has granted IIT Patna two weeks to file a response, with the next hearing set for May 5, 2026. While the parents have temporarily called off their protest following the police assurance, the following key points remain central to the ongoing dispute:

  • Student Future: The education of nearly 800 children from Nursery to 12th grade is at stake.
  • Legal Agreement: The school management claims a valid contract exists until 2049, while IIT Patna cites agreement violations.
  • Administrative Action: Reports indicate the campus saw the placement of a Kendriya Vidyalaya board on the school premises during the closure period.
  • Police Role: DSP-2 Amarendra Kumar Jha mediated the situation to ensure the protest did not escalate further outside the campus gates.
