The Ministry of Railways has taken a major step to improve connectivity in the Mithila and Kosi regions of Bihar. A proposal for a new rail line between Laheriasarai in Darbhanga and Saharsa Junction has been officially sent to NITI Aayog. This 95 km long new track is estimated to cost ₹2,376 Crore and aims to make travel much faster for the common people.

Which stations will be on this new route?
The new line will connect several villages and towns that currently lack direct rail access. The track is planned to pass through Laheriasarai, Dekuli, Ughra, Khaira, Bithauli, Shankarrohar, Hawidih, Sajanpur, Kanhauli, Jagdishpur, Ghanshyampur, Kirtipur, Jamalpur, Mahishi, Bangaon, and Saharsa Junction. Currently, trains take a long route via Samastipur, Khagaria, and Mansi. This new project will reduce the rail distance between Darbhanga and Saharsa by approximately 75 km.
What is the cost and infrastructure plan?
The total estimated cost for this project is ₹2,376 Crore. The construction plan includes significant infrastructure to handle the riverine terrain.
- Length: 95 km of new track.
- Bridges: One high-level bridge over the Kosi River, 14 major bridges, and 41 minor bridges.
- Crossings: 72 underpasses will be built to ensure road traffic is not disturbed.
- Stations: 10 crossing stations and 2 halts are proposed.
Once NITI Aayog approves the proposal, it will be sent to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for final financial clearance. Land acquisition will begin only after the final approval is granted.
