The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has officially started the process for constructing a new four-lane bridge over the Gandak River at Rewa Ghat. This project is set to transform the connectivity between Muzaffarpur and Chhapra, addressing the long-standing issue of traffic congestion. Currently, the two-lane bridge at this location is a major bottleneck, causing frequent and severe traffic jams for thousands of daily commuters.

Current status of the Rewa Ghat bridge project

  • NHAI has initiated the preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) and started the land acquisition process.
  • A consultant agency has been selected to finalize the technical designs and project requirements.
  • The NHAI Project Director has requested revenue maps from the Circle Officers (COs) of Saraiya, Marwan, and Kurhani.
  • Land measurement and demarcation are currently being carried out to identify the areas needed for construction.

Impact on regional transport and common public

The new four-lane bridge will significantly reduce travel time between Muzaffarpur and Chhapra. By replacing the narrow two-lane structure, the project will ensure a smoother flow of traffic and lower fuel consumption for vehicles. Additionally, a 17-kilometer stretch of the Chhapra-Muzaffarpur road is also scheduled for a four-lane upgrade to match the capacity of the new bridge.

This infrastructure development is expected to boost the regional economy by facilitating faster movement of goods. Better roads will also improve access to healthcare and education for people living in the surrounding rural areas. The project marks a significant step in improving the National Highway network in North Bihar.
