A serious case of negligence regarding passenger privacy has come to light at the Jayprakash Narayan International Airport in Patna. The wife of a Major, who had arrived at the airport from an Indigo flight, reported finding CCTV cameras inside the baby care room. This room is specifically designated for mothers to feed their infants and change diapers in private. The incident has raised significant concerns about the safety and dignity of women travelers using these facilities.

How did the CCTV camera issue come to light?

The matter was reported when a Major and his wife were using the airport’s baby care facility for their child. While inside, the wife noticed a CCTV camera installed in the room. Upon closer inspection, she discovered a second camera as well. Suspecting that the breastfeeding area was under active surveillance, she immediately informed her husband. The couple then contacted the CISF personnel and the housekeeping staff on duty. To ensure there was proof of the situation, the couple reportedly recorded a video showing the location of the cameras within the private room.

What is the response from airport authorities?

Airport Director Chandra Pratap Dwivedi addressed the complaint by stating that he was previously unaware of the cameras in that specific room. He explained that the room was set up during the election period and the cameras were installed at that time. However, he maintained that the cameras are currently deactivated and not recording any footage. Despite this explanation, the presence of such equipment in private spaces is a sensitive issue under Indian law. Key details regarding airport management and privacy rules include:

Legal and safety standards for baby care rooms

Under existing legal provisions in India, installing cameras in private spaces such as toilets, changing rooms, or feeding areas is considered illegal to protect an individual’s right to privacy. While major airports like Delhi and Mumbai provide private baby care rooms equipped with changing tables and seating to offer a peaceful environment, surveillance in these zones is strictly avoided. Passengers who face such issues at Patna Airport can reach out to the Airport Grievance Officer, Prem Prabhakar, to report their concerns and ensure that privacy standards are maintained for all travelers.
