Residents of Patna are set to witness a massive upgrade in their daily commute infrastructure. The Patna Metro Rail Corporation is constructing the largest underground station of the project right next to Patna Junction. This specific station will serve as the main interchange hub, connecting passengers from different routes seamlessly. The design aims to handle a daily footfall of approximately 66,000 passengers once fully operational.
How the three-level station will work
The engineering plan for this station is unique because it connects two major corridors underground. The structure is divided into three distinct levels to manage the heavy rush and train movement efficiently.
- First Floor (Concourse): This level is for passengers to buy tickets, pass through security checks, and access station facilities.
- Second Floor: Situated at a depth of about 11-12 meters, this floor will have platforms for Corridor 2 trains running from Patna Junction to New ISBT.
- Third Floor: This is the deepest level at 23-24 meters, hosting platforms for Corridor 1 trains moving between Danapur and Khemnichak.
Project timeline and recent updates
Work is moving fast to meet the deadlines set for the project. As of February 2026, two new elevated stations, Khemnichak and Malahi Pakri, are facing final safety reviews and are expected to open for the public this month. The authorities are targeting late 2026 for the completion of structural work on the underground section between Patna Junction and Rajendra Nagar.
Construction crews are currently working near Buddha Park to identify and shift underground utility lines. Meanwhile, tunnel boring work is active between PMCH and Gandhi Maidan to ensure the tracks are laid without disturbing the heritage zones above.
Expected ticket prices and facilities
The metro system will bring modern ticketing options to the city. While the official rate card is yet to be released, fares are expected to range from ₹10 to ₹60 based on how far you travel. The gates will accept QR codes from smartphones and smart cards, making entry quick and easy. Standard rules regarding luggage limits of around 25 kg will apply to ensure passenger comfort.
