Patna Metro construction has moved into an important phase with the resumption of tunneling work under the Rajendra Nagar Terminal. The project was on hold since December 2025 because the team was waiting for a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from Indian Railways. Following several discussions between engineers and railway authorities, the clearance was granted on March 10, 2026. This allows the work on Corridor-2 to proceed directly beneath the active Patna-Howrah rail lines without affecting the safety of the trains running above.

Why was the project halted and what is the new timeline?

The construction work between Moinul Haque Stadium and Rajendra Nagar Terminal had stopped due to structural safety concerns and future expansion plans of the railway terminal. After confirming that the metro alignment would not interfere with railway infrastructure, the NOC was issued. Excavation started again on March 12, 2026, using Tunnel Boring Machines. Officials from Patna Metro Rail Corporation have announced that the underground section of Corridor-2 is expected to be completed by the end of 2026. Meanwhile, the elevated priority segment is targeting a partial opening by October 2025.

Key details and technical facts about the underground station

The Rajendra Nagar Metro Station is set to be a major transport hub for the city. It is being built with specific technical requirements to ensure the safety of the railway tracks above. Below are the key project details:

Feature Technical Data
Station Depth 21 meters below the ground
Soil Cushion 15 meters between rail tracks and tunnel
Contractor Larsen and Toubro (L&T)
Contract Value 1,989 crore rupees for Corridor-2
Funding Agency Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)

At 21 meters deep, this will be one of the deepest metro stations in India. The station will serve as a dual connectivity point, allowing passengers to switch between the railway terminal and the metro network easily. The project uses modern Tunnel Boring Machines to keep the work precise and to minimize any vibration or impact on the busy Rajendra Nagar Terminal tracks.
