Bihar is set to receive a massive infrastructure boost with the development of the Sonepur Greenfield Civil Airport in the Saran district. This project will be spread across 4,228 acres and is modeled after the Noida and Navi Mumbai international airports. The Bihar government has already sanctioned 1,302 crore rupees for land acquisition to meet the 2030 completion deadline and the process has been officially expedited as of February 2026.
Key Features and Financial Status of the Project
The Bihar State Budget 2026-27 provided the necessary administrative approval for this mega project. Finance Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav confirmed the funding for land acquisition in the Dariyapur Chawar area. Unlike the existing Patna airport, this new facility will support 24/7 civilian operations and international long-haul flights.

Public Impact and Local Connectivity
The airport is expected to become a major hub for North Bihar and will significantly reduce the congestion at Patna’s Jay Prakash Narayan International Airport. It will provide easier access for international tourists visiting the Buddhist circuit and the famous Sonepur Fair. To ensure smooth connectivity, the government is building two new 6-lane bridges parallel to the existing Jay Prakash Setu and Mahatma Gandhi Setu. Local real estate in the Sonepur-Hajipur-Chhapra belt is also expected to see a sharp rise in value as construction progresses. The project has been a long-standing vision of Saran MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy and is now being pushed forward as a central-state collaborative effort.
