Unique Tribal Art of West Champaran
West Champaran district in Bihar is home to some special tribes living in the forests. The Tharu and Urav tribes are the main ones known for creating attractive garments and decorations. Women here weave shawls, sweaters, bedsheets, pillow covers, towels, tablecloths, and other clothes using spinning wheels and handlooms. The strength of the fabrics and the appealing traditional designs handcrafted on them make them highly popular on a global level.
Tharu Tribe’s Presence in Demand Zones
Various regions in Demandjile, at national and international levels, are primarily inhabited by the Tharu tribe. Major areas include Bagaha-2, Mainatand, Gaunaha, Harnatand, and Ramnagar. Women in these areas specialize in weaving clothes using handlooms, which serves as a primary source of income for their families. Surprisingly, the demand for these handwoven fabrics from Tharuhat reaches several states in the country like Delhi, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and even internationally.
Recognition and Appreciation
Residents of Mishrauli village in Bagaha-2 testify to the craftsmanship of women like Krishna Devi, who along with other tribal women, create numerous shawls, towels, blankets, pillow covers, and sweaters every day. Similarly, groups of around 25 women in Rukmani Devi’s center engage in hand-weaving fabrics and adding artistic designs to finished products. President Murmu has praised the women’s work in handloom, and their products were showcased at a fair in Delhi last year, receiving positive feedback and appreciation.
