Lakshmi Narayan Yadav’s Innovative Farming Techniques

Lakshmi Narayan Yadav, a farmer from Bahadhiya village in Katariya block of Banka district, Bihar, has adopted various farming techniques to increase his earnings. He has 18 acres of land, out of which he has set up polyhouses on two acres where he grows beans, pumpkin, cucumber, ridge gourd, and coriander. In his other fields, he cultivates crops like maize, wheat, moong, and arhar, along with mango orchards. Despite having rocky soil initially, through hard work and training, he has made the land fertile and set up polyhouses at a cost of 75,000 rupees each, now owning three polyhouses.

Cultivation of Beans in Polyhouses

Lakshmi Narayan Yadav explains the process of cultivating beans in his polyhouse. The soil is prepared by mixing lime and organic manure to create beds. The beds are then covered with plastic and seeds are sown after creating holes with the help of a glass. After 15-20 days, seedlings start sprouting, followed by irrigation through drip irrigation. The plants start flowering after 30 days and bear fruits within two to three days, leading to a successful harvest.

Seven-Month Bean Harvesting Cycle

Yadav mentions that the bean cultivation cycle lasts for seven months, starting in January. He has 12 beds in one of his polyhouses, yielding up to 1200 kilos of beans. Harvesting requires a gap of three to four days, and he sells the beans to wholesalers in the local market. Initially, he receives 50-60 rupees per kilo, which later decreases to 30-40 rupees. With this, he earns more than 5 lakhs annually through bean cultivation.
