Introduction
Many farmers consider farming to be a loss-making deal, but those who adopt technology-based farming can reap better benefits than any other business. In Banka district, there are many examples of farmers earning lakhs annually through vegetable farming. One such example is Neelam Devi, a woman farmer from Pokharia village, who earns lakhs annually by preparing vegetable seedlings from seeds in her nursery.
Transition to Technological Farming
Initially, Neelam Devi prepared vegetable seedlings from seeds in small pieces of land, but when this did not yield profit, she decided to seek advice from agricultural scientists in 2019. With their guidance, she constructed a poly house with the help of bamboo and balls, where she now prepares seedlings of various vegetable varieties. She now supplies seeds of all types of vegetables to nearby farmers at very low rates, establishing a unique identity in the area.
High Earnings through Quality Seedlings
Neelam Devi shared that she prepares seedlings of more than 50 different varieties of vegetables in her nursery, including chili, tomato, bitter gourd, pumpkin, watermelon, ridge gourd, brinjal, capsicum, papaya, cauliflower, and more. By focusing on producing high-quality seedlings and treating the seeds well, she is able to start germination within five days. These seedlings are ready within 25 days and are then sold to farmers, allowing her to earn more than five lakh annually through her nursery.
