Bhagalpur district in Bihar is set to receive advanced medical facilities similar to AIIMS (All India Institute of Medical Sciences). The super specialty hospital has been constructed and will provide treatments that were previously only available outside the district. The procurement dispute between the central and state governments has been resolved, and the hospital is expected to start operating soon. The hospital will offer OPD services and various medical departments will be opened gradually.

The construction of the hospital has been funded by both the central and state governments, with 60% of the funding coming from the central government and 40% from the state government. The state government is responsible for appointing doctors and nurses, and the process is currently underway. Initially, three departments – cardiology, neurology, and urology – will begin offering OPD services. Currently, three doctors, ten nurses, and health workers have been appointed from the Mayaganj hospital in Bhagalpur.

The opening of the super specialty hospital will not only benefit the people of Bhagalpur but also reduce the burden on the largest hospital in eastern Bihar, the Mayaganj hospital. Currently, patients from several districts, including Bhagalpur, Banka, Munger, Khagaria, Katihar, and Nawada, as well as neighboring states Jharkhand and West Bengal, come to the Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital in Mayaganj for treatment. With the new hospital, patients will have better facilities, and those who require emergency treatment will no longer need to be referred to other states, providing convenience for the people of eastern Bihar.

The seven-story super specialty hospital in Bhagalpur, built at a cost of 200 crores over the past two years, has 200 beds. However, due to disputes between the central and state governments, the OPD services of the hospital were not operational until now. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to virtually inaugurate the hospital, and the Health Department’s Principal Secretary, Pratyay Amrit, has held a meeting with officials and provided them with instructions regarding the inauguration.
