Bihar Legislative Council Election Notification Issued

After the successful completion of the Rajya Sabha elections for six seats, the Election Commission has issued a notification to conduct elections for eleven seats in the Bihar Legislative Council. The term of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Shah Nawaz Hussain, and 11 other members is ending on May 6, 2024. The Election Commission has announced the election schedule for the vacant 11 seats, with notification released on Friday, February 23.

Key Members Whose Term is Ending

Among the 11 members whose term is ending in the Bihar Legislative Council are Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, former CM Rabri Devi, BJP senior leader Syed Shah Nawaz Hussain, and former minister Sanjay Kumar Jha. With BJP having 78 seats, JDU with 45, and HAM with 4 MLAs, it will be interesting to see the outcome of the upcoming elections and which party secures the majority.

History and Election Process of Bihar Legislative Council

The Bihar Legislative Council was established as per the Indian Constitution in 1950 with 72 members, later increased to 96 in 1958. The number was reduced to 75 in 2000 after the formation of Jharkhand. The election process involves members being elected by local bodies, graduates, teachers, and appointed by the Governor based on expertise in literature, knowledge, art, cooperatives, and social service. The Council operates on a system of proportional representation by single transferable vote.
