Bird flu has once again knocked at the doors in Jharkhand. After reports of deaths of poultry birds in the regional poultry area of Hotwa, samples were sent to the National High Security Animal Disease Institute (ICAR) in Bhopal where confirmation of H5N1 Avian Influenza was made. Officials from the National Institute of AI Security Animal Disease Diagnostic Lab, Bhopal, have sprung into action upon confirmation of bird flu.

The Animal Husbandry Directorate in Ranchi issued a press release announcing the formation of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) under an Action Plan for culling poultry, cleaning infected areas, and disinfecting within a 1 km radius of the Epic Center in the Hotwa poultry area. The team was formed to take necessary steps in combating the spread of bird flu in the region.

Dr. Rajni Pushpa Sinha, Joint Director (Poultry) of the state’s Animal Husbandry, has written to the Director of Animal Health and Production Institute Kane urging measures to prevent and control the disease. Following the directives of the Indian government, steps such as setting up control rooms, preparing daily reports, and taking all necessary measures with administrative support to prevent the spread of bird flu are advised.

Officials have stated that symptoms of infection in humans include severe pain in the upper part of the back, fever, difficulty in breathing, cough, cold, and blood in saliva. The Animal Husbandry Department has issued advisories urging people to inform authorities upon sighting dead birds.
