Excavation of Ancient Vikramshila Underway in Bhagalpur, Bihar
Excavation work has begun on the remnants of ancient Vikramshila under the jungleeshwar Teela in Bhagalpur, Bihar. The excavation started a few days ago and during the process, various items such as buildings resembling Tibetan temples have been discovered.
Discovery of Tibetan Temple-like Structures during Excavation
The excavation team has unearthed signs of buildings resembling Tibetan temples during the excavation of the second layer of jungleeshwar Teela near the Vikramshila excavation site. The officials from the Department of Archaeology and Survey present at the site believe that more valuable information related to Vikramshila can be discovered with further excavation.
Excavation to Reveal More Layers of Vikramshila’s History
Officials are hopeful that as the excavation at jungleeshwar Teela progresses, new layers of Vikramshila’s history will be unveiled. The excavation team led by Gautami Bhattacharya and Bodh Gaya Sangrahalaya’s Virendra Kumar is overseeing the dig, which is expected to reveal significant findings after the excavation of three layers.
Plans for Central University at Vikramshila Site
The government of Bihar has identified land for the construction of the Vikramshila Central University near the Vikramshila excavation site. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the establishment of a Central University named after Vikramshila and allocated funds for its construction. The excavation at jungleeshwar Teela is expected to provide valuable insights into the ancient heritage of Vikramshila.
