Impact of Burning Crop Residue

Despite repeated requests, some farmers in Gaya are still burning crop residues, causing harm to the soil, human health, and the environment. The organic carbon in the soil is already low, and burning crop residues further destroys it. This practice also kills beneficial microorganisms in the soil and leads to respiratory issues like difficulty in breathing, eye irritation, and nasal and throat problems.

Consequences for Farmers

The District Magistrate, Dr. Tyagarajan S.M., highlighted that farmers who burn crop residues are facing consequences such as the suspension of their registration numbers. This means they cannot avail benefits under various agricultural schemes, including the PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi. They are also unable to sell their wheat through online platforms without a valid registration number from the agriculture department.

Action Taken Against Violators

In a recent incident in Gaya, a farmer named Gaya Prasad and his father Dhanushdhari Singh from Gram Post-Itwana, Gurua Block, were charged for operating a combine harvester without permission from the district administration. Despite repeated warnings, farmers continue to burn crop residues, leading to environmental pollution. As a result, directives have been issued to register cases against these farmers for polluting the environment. Additionally, the salaries of four agriculture coordinators and one assistant technical manager have been suspended for negligence in their duties.
